There are many funding streams that support clean tech companies and other employers working to bolster the clean growth economy. Many of these are available as additional funding to support intern salaries.

Innovacorp’s CleanTech Development Program will provide up to $50,000 in non-dilutive, non-repayable funding to address key technical and business milestones. This is for high potential clean technology start-up approaching investment readiness.
As part of Canada's national strategy for the protection of species at risk, the Government of Canada established the Habitat Stewardship Program (HSP) for Species at Risk. The overall goals of the HSP are to "contribute to the recovery of endangered, threatened, and other species at risk, and to prevent other species from becoming a conservation concern, by engaging Canadians from all walks of life in conservation actions to benefit wildlife." The HSP allocates approximately $12.2 million a year to projects that both conserve and protect species at risk and their habitats and to those that prevent other species from becoming a conservation concern.
The Coastal Restoration Fund is part of the national Oceans Protection Plan. The fund will provide $75 million over 5 years to support projects that help to restore coastal aquatic habitats.
The National Wetland Conservation Fund (NWCF) supports on-the-ground activities to restore and enhance wetlands in Canada. Funding is variable and depends on the project. Typical funding ranges from $50,000 to $250,000, with a maximum amount available of $500,000 per year per project. A minimum of 1:1 matching contributions (from non-federal sources) is required ($1 confirmed match for $1 NWCF funding).
The Atlantic Ecosystems Initiatives Funding Program (AEI) aims to improve the health, productivity and long-term sustainability of ecosystems in Atlantic Canada. The program supports projects that use an ecosystem-based approach that includes broad partnerships and collaborative action that leads to positive environmental results. Funding will be provided for projects that enhance integrated ecosystem planning and decision-making, increase ecosystem knowledge and science, and undertake actions that reach across Atlantic Canada to conserve, restore and enhance the health of ecosystems.
MMSB’s Solid Waste Management Innovation Fund (SWMIF) provides financial support to innovators who are advancing sustainable waste management by finding creative ways to turn trash into treasure in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP) helps Canadian companies of all sizes move their state-of-the-art goods and services from the laboratory to the marketplace.
The Energy Efficiency for Industry program is offering cost-shared assistance to industrial companies to implement energy management projects, including CAN/CSA-ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems Standard pilots, and for two types of energy studies: Process Integration and Computational Fluid Dynamics.
The Government of Canada’s $2 billion Low Carbon Economy Fund is an important part of the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change. It will support its implementation by leveraging investments in projects that will generate clean growth and reduce greenhouse gas emissions towards meeting or exceeding commitments under the Paris Agreement.
Clean growth is good for our planet and our pocketbooks. That is why we introduced the Clean Growth Program (CGP), which provides $155 million for clean technology research and development (R&D) and demonstration projects in Canada’s energy, mining and forestry sectors.
This program covers five areas focused on pressing environmental challenges and economic opportunities facing Canada’s natural resource operations:
Reducing greenhouse gas and air-polluting emissions
Minimizing landscape disturbances and improving waste management
The production and use of advanced materials and bioproducts
Efficient energy use and productivity
Reducing water use and impacts on aquatic ecosystems

CTA Cleantech is a 10-week virtual program run by the Consulates General of Canada in New York and San Francisco that helps high-growth-potential clean tech companies in: green chemistry and advanced materials, energy and water data analytics and management, clean energy, clean transportation and mobility, smart grid, and consumer engagement
Invests in strategic projects that build the economies of Atlantic Canada's communities. Focusses on investments leading to long-term employment and economic capacity building in rural communities, and urban initiatives that stimulate the competitiveness and vitality of rural communities. Helps capitalize on opportunities and strengths in communities, e.g.:
Federal Government will fund up to 50% of eligible costs for projects. The program targets projects that will contribute to the rehabilitation of both water treatment and distribution infrastructure and existing wastewater and storm water treatment systems; collection and conveyance infrastructure; and initiatives that improve asset management, system optimization, and planning for future upgrades to water and wastewater systems.
Encourages cities and their most creative minds to adopt new and innovative approaches to city-building. A smart city uses technology and data to improve livability and opportunities for the city and its people. “Smart cities have the potential to improve every aspect of community life – how people move around, how they live and play, how they earn a living, how they learn and are empowered to participate in society, how they interact with the natural environment, and how they create safe and secure public spaces”
Three separate rounds, each including one large prize of $50 million; two prizes of $10 million for mid-sized communities; one prize of $5 million for a small community; and one prize of $5 million available for an Indigenous community.
Provides funding and knowledge services to support sustainable community development. Projects must focus on one of the following areas: Sustainable neighbourhood and brownfields action plans; Energy efficiency and recovery; Transportation and fuel efficiency; Water quality and conservation; Waste management and diversion; or Brownfields.
• Will fund plans and feasibility studies at 50% up to a max of $175,000
• Will fund pilot projects at 50% up to a maximum of $350,000
• Will help fund capital projects up to 80%; maximum contribution $5 million, with 15% being a grant, with the remainder a low-interest loan
Provides funding, training and resources to help municipalities adapt to the impacts of climate change and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The type of initiatives the program supports include:
• Grants of up to $175,000 to develop plans and studies
• Grant funding for municipalities to implement climate change initiatives. Funding is available for up to 80% of costs of up to $1 million
• Grant funding to supplement salaries for new or existing municipal staff to implement climate change programs and projects
Funds to encourage Canadians to take action to address clean air, clean water, climate change and nature issues, and to build the capacity of communities to sustain these activities into the future. Project must have measurable, positive environmental results and promote community participation. Projects can be local, regional, or national in scale.
Community Waste Diversion Fund (Newfoundland and Labrador only)
Provides financial support to communities across NL that are finding exciting new ways to reduce, reuse or recycle more waste. Municipalities and Local Service Districts may apply for a maximum $10,000 non-repayable contribution for initiatives that foster solid waste diversion in Newfoundland and Labrador. A community must submit a proposal for consideration. Proposals must demonstrate:
